Non-EU

San Marino

Although landlocked, the Republic of San Marino has its own ship register, which also accepts pleasure craft belonging to non-resident owners. We help you assess this option and handle the registration for you.

Who runs the register

The maritime administration is the Republic of San Marino's Civil Aviation and Maritime Navigation Authority (Autorità per l'Aviazione Civile e la Navigazione Marittima), supported by the San Marino Ship Register (SMSR) in managing registrations. The governing legislation is Maritime Law no. 120 of 2019, together with safety codes for small and large yachts in force since 2021.

Who can register a vessel

The register has no restrictions based on the nationality of the owner or crew: both individuals and companies can register, even without residence in San Marino.

Which vessels

  • Private yachts under 24 metres (small yacht code) and of 24 metres and above (large yacht code), carrying up to 12 passengers.
  • Commercial yachts.
  • Merchant ships and cruise ships.

Advantages

  • No national requirements beyond the international conventions, and electronic certificates.
  • A single commercial registration for charter with or without crew.
  • Yachts in private use can be bareboat chartered for up to 84 days a year.
  • Commercial registration can be temporarily suspended to return to private use, through an online procedure.

The register also publishes a guide to the EU customs treatment of yachts registered in San Marino: together with the relevant professionals, we assess your vessel's customs and tax position.

How we help

  • Gathering and checking the owner's and the vessel's documents.
  • Handling the application and dealings with the register.
  • Coordination with authorised surveyors where an inspection is required.

Contact us using the form at the bottom of the page with the vessel's details: we will explain how to proceed.
