Principality of Monaco

The flag of the Principality of Monaco is reserved for those with a direct connection to the Principality. If you live in Monaco and want to register your boat under the Monegasque flag, we help you prepare the documents and handle the application.

Who runs the register

Applications for registration are submitted to the Direction des Affaires Maritimes, the Principality's Maritime Affairs Department.

Who can register a vessel

Registration is open to Monegasque nationals and residents of the Principality. This makes the Monegasque flag a good option, for example, for Italian nationals who are resident in Monaco.

Main documents

• Purchase invoice (new vessel) or bill of sale and deletion certificate from the previous flag (used vessel).
• Builder's certificate and engine power declaration.
• CE certificate for vessels up to 24 metres, or class certificate for longer vessels.
• Customs import document for vessels bought outside the European Union.
• Application form, copy of the boating licence, identity document or residence permit, and photographs of the vessel.

Good to know

• An annual fee is payable for all vessels under the Monegasque flag.
• Registration does not include a berth, which must be requested separately from the operator of Monaco's ports.
• The appointment of a captain or crew must be notified to the Maritime Affairs Department.
• A separate licence is required if the vessel has radio equipment on board.

The Principality is not a member state of the European Union, so we review the customs aspects of the transaction with you in advance.
