P&I Insurance

P&I (Protection & Indemnity) insurance covers the owner's liabilities arising from the operation of the vessel. Originally developed for merchant ships, it is now also common for large yachts, commercial vessels and charter fleets, where standard pleasure craft third-party liability cover is not enough.

What it usually covers

• death, injury and illness of crew, guests and other persons on board;
• damage caused to other vessels in a collision;
• damage to harbours, jetties, buoys and other fixed structures;
• pollution by oil and other substances;
• wreck removal, when ordered by the authorities;
• legal costs of defending claims for compensation.

Who provides it

P&I cover is provided by P&I Clubs, mutual associations of shipowners, and by insurers on a fixed-premium basis. Clubs usually charge an initial contribution with possible supplementary calls, whereas fixed-premium policies give you a known cost. Policies also differ in limits, deductibles and assistance services in port.

• owners of yachts with a professional crew;
• vessels used for commercial charter;
• owners who often cruise abroad or in areas where high limits of cover are required;
• owners who must provide proof of financial security to the flag state, a port or a charterer.
