Insurance Surveys

To insure a pleasure boat or yacht, the insurance company may ask for an insurance survey: a report that describes the condition of the vessel and estimates its value, so that the policy terms and the sum insured can be set correctly.

When it is required

Requirements vary from one insurer to another. A survey is typically requested, for example:

• when taking out a new policy, especially for older or high-value vessels
• on renewal, when the insurer asks for a periodic update on the vessel's condition
• after a change of ownership or major works that affect the vessel's value

What the survey covers

• Condition survey ("perizia di stato"): the state of the hull, deck, systems, engines and safety equipment, with any recommendations from the surveyor
• Valuation survey ("perizia di valore"): an estimate of the vessel's market value at the time of inspection

The two are often requested together. Before booking the inspection, it is worth checking with the insurer or broker what the report must include, whether the vessel must be inspected out of the water and whether photographs or specific tests are needed.
