Hull Insurance

Hull insurance ("polizza corpi", also known as "casco") protects the value of your pleasure craft: hull, engines, systems and on-board equipment. Unlike third-party liability, which covers damage caused to others, hull insurance pays for damage to the boat itself.

Who needs it

It is not required by law, but it is recommended for anyone who owns a valuable craft. The leasing company or lender may require it when the purchase is financed, and it is usually essential for craft used for charter, to protect an asset that works all year round.

What it usually covers

• total loss and partial damage from sinking, grounding, collision and impact;
• fire, lightning and explosion;
• theft of the craft, outboard engines and equipment;
• weather damage, both under way and at the mooring;
• damage during hauling out, launching, storage and road transport, if included;
• salvage, recovery and wreck removal costs, within the policy limits.

The main options

• Sum insured: agreed value at the start of the policy, or market value at the time of the loss;
• Deductibles and excess percentages, which affect the premium;
• Navigation limits: national waters, the Mediterranean or wider areas;
• extensions for racing, tenders, accessories and mechanical breakdown of engines;
• laying-up periods at a reduced premium, where available.
