Gibraltar

Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory at the entrance to the Mediterranean and outside the European Union, offers a register for ships and yachts that entitles them to fly the British Red Ensign. We help you check the requirements and handle the registration for you.

Who runs the register

The Gibraltar Maritime Administration (GMA) runs the ship and yacht registers on behalf of the Government of Gibraltar. Since 1997 Gibraltar has been a Category 1 register of the Red Ensign Group, able to register vessels of any type and tonnage. The register is on the Paris MoU white list for port state control and is ISO 9001 certified.

Who can register a vessel

Under the amendments to the pleasure yacht regulations in force since 2021, British and Commonwealth citizens and those of many other countries can register; citizens of the European Economic Area remain eligible. Companies incorporated in, among other places, Gibraltar, the UK, the Crown Dependencies, the Commonwealth or the European Economic Area are also eligible: if they have no place of business in Gibraltar, they must appoint a local representative.

Which vessels

The register accepts yachts of various sizes, and a Small Ships Register is also available for smaller vessels.
