Crew Management on Red Ensign Registers

Many yachts cruising the Mediterranean fly a flag of the Red Ensign Group: the United Kingdom, the Crown Dependencies and the UK Overseas Territories. Each register has its own administration, but they all share common standards. The Red Ensign Group registers

• Category 1, with no tonnage or type limits: United Kingdom, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Gibraltar, Isle of Man;
• Category 2, with tonnage limits: Anguilla, Falkland Islands, Guernsey, Jersey, Montserrat, St Helena, Turks and Caicos.

For large commercial yachts the common technical standard is the REG Yacht Code.

Contracts and MLC 2006

On UK-registered yachts operating commercially, every seafarer must have an individual Seafarer Employment Agreement compliant with MLC 2006. Pleasure yachts are excluded from the convention, but in some cases must still keep a crew agreement, as explained in MCA MGN 474. The other registers in the group have similar but not identical rules, which need checking case by case.

Certificates of competency and documents

• checking the crew's yacht and STCW certificates of competency;
• help applying for recognition of foreign qualifications: in the UK, the Certificate of Equivalent Competency issued by the MCA;
• checking medical certificates (ENG1 or recognised equivalents) and mandatory courses;
• organising the ship's documentation for inspections and checks.
