Crew Insurance

Crew insurance protects the crew on board yachts and boats: captain, deckhands, engineers, chefs and service staff. It protects the people and, at the same time, the owner, who is liable towards their crew.

Who needs it

• yacht owners with paid crew;
• charter and yacht management companies;
• owners who take on crew for seasonal periods or deliveries.

What it usually covers

• accidents, with benefits for death and permanent disability;
• illness, medical expenses and hospital stays, including abroad;
• repatriation of the seafarer and sending a replacement;
• the owner's liability towards the crew;
• loss of or damage to personal effects, if included.

The Maritime Labour Convention

For vessels within the scope of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006), the 2014 amendments, in force since 18 January 2017, require the shipowner to provide financial security for repatriation in the event of abandonment and for compensation in the event of a seafarer's death or long-term disability. Whether it applies depends on the vessel's flag and use, particularly commercial use, and must be checked case by case. Crew insurance does not replace the social security and insurance obligations under maritime employment law, but complements them.
