Crew Employment Advice for the Italian Register

Employing a crew on an Italian-flagged yacht means complying at once with the Italian Navigation Code (Codice della navigazione), the Italian Pleasure Boating Code (Codice della nautica da diporto) and maritime labour law. Agenzia Magnum assists owners, operators and masters with the administration of onboard personnel, working with the maritime authorities and with the relevant employment consultants and social security bodies.

Signing on and crew documents

On pleasure ships, onboard services are performed by personnel entered in the Italian seafarers' registers (matricole della gente di mare). To employ seafarers on pleasure craft, including those used commercially, the owner or operator must first obtain from the competent authority a crew list (ruolino di equipaggio), on which the names of the crew on board are recorded. We take care of:

  • checking the seafarer's documents: entry in the seafarers' registers, seaman's book (libretto di navigazione), STCW certificates and professional qualifications, valid medical fitness certificate;
  • preparing the seafarer employment agreement (contratto di arruolamento) and the sign-on and sign-off entries;
  • applying for and updating the crew list (ruolino or ruolo di equipaggio);
  • notifying the actual crew composition when crew rotate between charter vessels of the same operator, which the law allows without sign-on and sign-off entries provided the maritime authority is informed on the same day.

Collective agreements, social security and insurance

The sector has separate national collective agreements for private yachting and for commercial and charter yachting: which one applies depends on how the vessel is actually used. Together with the employment consultant, we coordinate the formalities with INPS (the Italian social security institute), which also covers seafarers' sickness and maternity, and with INAIL – Settore Navigazione (the Italian workplace accident insurance institute, maritime sector, formerly IPSEMA) for accident insurance.

MLC 2006 compliance

Italy ratified the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006) by Law 113/2013. For vessels subject to the convention, we help you keep contracts, hours of rest records and the documents required for inspections in order. The up-to-date text of the Codice della nautica da diporto is available on Normattiva.

Contact us using the form at the bottom of the page: together we will review your crew's situation and the formalities required.
